Minit (2022 Games #2)

Minit is a game I had never heard of until I played Disc Room. Kitty Calis is a dev on both games so Minit was mentioned in some Disc Room coverage and I don't think I even knew anything about it, I think the right people were just positive enough about it that I made a mental note, and then it was free on Epic at some point over the summer, and...here we are!

Turns out Minit is an adventure game that's kind of Zelda-lite in terms of how you're exploring a map and at first you can't go anywhere but then you get a sword, so you can cut down bushes that are blocking your way! And then you find other stuff that helps you get rid of other obstacles!

Except the sword is cursed, and from the moment you pick it up you die every sixty seconds, and every time you die you respawn back at your house. You always keep any items or upgrades you find, so it becomes a matter of figuring out what's a measurable bit of progress you can make within a minute's walk of your house.

It was very fun and cute, and I really enjoyed the one-minute gimmick! The rapid-death-and-respawn element of it did feel VERY Disc Room, and there's a lot of humor in it - there's an old man who tells you where to find a treasure, but he speaks so fucking slowly that you have to time out your path to him perfectly so that he'll get to the point before your minute is up. This game also joins Oracle of Seasons and Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion in my FAVORITE club, the "what happens if I hit this bomb with a sword? Oh, I instantly die" club. WHY IS THAT SO FUNNY TO ME EVERY TIME?

Minit took me two hours to beat, which spanned two sittings, which in retrospect was not the best way to play it? The gimmick is fun until it isn't, because for most of the game there are a lot of different things you could be doing, so it's hard to feel especially stuck - if I couldn't do something I would always just assume oh, I must need to come back to that when I have another item, and then I would go do something else. But the further you get, the fewer alternatives you have for things to do, and I got to a couple of points where there was one specific thing I needed to do and it wasn't clicking for me what that one thing was, and that could get frustrating. I called it a night when I started hitting a wall and I finished it up the next day, but if I'd realized how close I was to the end I would have just stuck it out.

There is some sidequest stuff I'm aware I didn't resolve, and there are some indications in the game that there's a bunch of stuff I didn't find, but I'm feeling okay about leaving this one alone for now. If I replay sometime I'll probably do all the extra stuff but for now...I'm good.

THIS FELT NEGATIVE? IT WAS A VERY FUN AND CUTE TWO HOURS. IT ENDED RIGHT AS IT WAS STARTING TO WEAR THIN WHICH IS GREAT TIMING ON MINIT'S PART.
